Day 3 – RELAX, He’s the Author of Your Story


Are you burning out in the race toward success? Do you work and sweat, shooting in the dark and hoping that you’ll somehow hit your destiny?

Consider the following…

Walking in Unforced Rhythms is Kind of Like Ghostwriting

“Shauna, I want you to write my story.” Her statement came right out of the blue and took my breath away.

“Really? You want me?” Inside my head, I asked, “Am I good enough to write YOUR story?” But she was adamant, and it ignited a confidence and excitement in me that I didn’t expect.

For the next six months, I had the incredible privilege of being the ghostwriter for this lovely woman who lives more than 10,000 km away from me. For obvious reason, I won’t tell you the who, what, or why of her book except to say, “It was so fun!”

She would send me a basic outline for each chapter so I knew the gist of what she wanted to say. Then we’d have a Skype appointment so we could chat through the details, and so I could hear her explain it in her own words. I’d even record our chats on my phone so that I could go back and re-listen to her voice.

Those Skype appointments quickly became a highlight. We didn’t just talk about chapters; we became long-distance friends. We’d chat about what’s going on in our lives, how our kids are doing, how we’re feeling, and what we’re passionate about. Before long, I started to understand her as a person, not just a client.

  • I became familiar with her voice and how she naturally explains herself.
  • I got to know her likes and dislikes.
  • I began to understand how she thinks and what she wants.

What a privilege to help someone else bring their story to life!

Ghostwriting vs. Unforced Rhythms

As I’ve been chewing this week on our next prompt word—STORY—I couldn’t help but draw comparisons between ghostwriting for my client and walking in Unforced Rhythms with my Heavenly Father.

What do I mean?



How many of us run ourselves ragged chasing the American Dream… more money, more stuff, more friends, more followers, more likes on FB? It’s exhausting.

My friends, knowing that Father God is the Author of my life takes the pressure off of me to make sure that my life is awesome. He’s got a much better plan in mind than we can ever imagine.

“Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us…” (Ephesians 3:20 NIV).

Just like when I worked with my client, I didn’t have to worry about the overall concept or strategy for her book. She had the structure down in her mind. It was her plan that I was following, not mine.

You see… reaching our destiny in life is not about executing the perfect plan. Our Father is the Grand Designer, and He has designed the perfect storyline for each one of us.

At the beginning of the project, my client and I had to set Skype appointments systematically and methodically to discuss the task at hand. It wasn’t meant to be fun or enjoyable. It was part of the job.

But as soon as we started to get to know each other, those appointments became so much more than just work. We actually looked forward to catching up with each other.

That’s just like our times with the Father. In the beginning, we have to discipline ourselves to block out times with Him. We set the timer and focus. It’s hard work.

But then something happens, and the relationship changes. All of a sudden, we find ourselves longing to spend time with Him. We look forward to catching up with our Father, and JOY replaces determination.

In fact, when the book was finished and I finally sent her the last chapter, she disappeared for three days. I found out after that it was because she couldn’t stop crying. “I don’t want to say Goodbye,” she said. How sweet is that?!

Oh, that we would have the same desperation to be with our Father. “I don’t want to say goodbye.”

“How lovely is your dwelling place, Lord Almighty! My soul yearns, even faints, for the courts of the Lord; my heart and my flesh cry out for the living God” (Psalm 84:1-2 NIV).



As time wore on, I found it easier and easier to write for my client. I didn’t have to guess what she was thinking or how she would say something. I could anticipate her words and emotions, and I could hear her voice in my mind.

The same thing goes with our relationship with God. The more we spend time with Him, the more we can speak His words and sound like Him. We don’t have to guess what He’s thinking… we KNOW what His voice sounds like.

“…His sheep follow Him because they know His voice” (John 10:4 NIV).

“My sheep listen to My voice; I know them, and they follow Me” (John 10:27 NLT).

When we know His voice and follow Him, He makes our path straight, and we prosper. And the pressure to perform (and the fear of failure that accompanies it) washes off,

and we can take a deep breath…






Freedom and peace come when we realize that Father God is the Author and we are simply the ghostwriters of that story. He is the Designer, and we are His reflection. He is the Architect, and we are His masterpiece.

“For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago” (Ephesians 2:10 NLT).

Wow! That’s awesome! It means that…

  • I don’t have to worry about making myself successful. It’s HIS Name on the line, and HIS job to bring success.
  • My job is just to be an accurate reflection of Him and give Him all the glory for the success He blesses me with.

Our job is simply to tell HIS story. It’s all about Him, and when we reflect Him, success follows.


Be at Rest, Oh My Soul – The Pressure Is Off

I’m convinced that much of our striving in life comes from not really knowing who our Father is.

My friends, take a deep breath and stop the race toward burnout. Stop spinning your wheels and just SPEND TIME WITH YOUR FATHER. He wants to speak to you and tell you His secrets.

“Your own ears will hear him. Right behind you a voice will say, ‘This is the way you should go,’ whether to the right or to the left” (Isaiah 30:21 NLT).
