Five Minute Friday – BUILD

I’ve just joined a special group of writers to write for FIVE MINUTES every Friday. No editing. No revising. Just WRITE. This week, the prompt word is BUILD… Go!

 ——————–♥——————–

Build - wideBuild. Even the word evokes a smile in me. I have strong memories of sawdust and raw materials, working alongside my carpenter dad in the garage. I LOVED making stuff. I loved starting with nothing and ending up with a masterpiece.

But isn’t that the beauty of building… to create something out of nothing?

  • 5MF- Build(1)Musicians build a repertoire
  • Artists build a portfolio
  • Lawyers build a case
  • Birds build a nest
  • Campers build a fire
  • Couples build a life together
  • Husbands and wives build a family

Sometimes, we get to start with something, and then we build upon it to make it even better…

  • Build your reputation
  • Build up your courage (Deut 1:38)
  • Build up hope (1 Thess 5:11)
  • Build up faith (Jude 1:20)

When we do this to a house, it’s called a renovation… and it’s actually very MESSY!

I know this all too well. We have recently suffered through a massive renovation in our house. It was meant to only encompass the kitchen, but then the bathrooms needed a lot of work, and then the windows were leaking, and then the family was begging for carpet instead of tile, and of course we have to change the paint to match the new carpets, and (oh my goodness) the ceilings look so yellow compared to the new grey paint…

You get the picture.

STOP. Wow, my timer just rang. That was a faster five minutes than I expected, and I didn’t even attach my Scripture yet. Here it is – fashionably late…

Make sure that when you eat and are satisfied, BUILD pleasant houses and settle in… [but] make sure you DON’T become so full of yourself and your things that you forget God, your God… (Deuteronomy 8:12-14 MSG)

Enough said.

Hi, I love your post! You’re right: building is messy. It feels like a giant renovation. I hope your home redo turned out better than you imagined! Nice to meet you and you live in a gorgeous corner of the world! (one of my best friends is from SA). Visiting from FMF in the spot after you.

Hey, Christina! Thanks for the lovely comments. The reno turned out wonderfully and I was super pleased with the results. And yes, SA is a beautiful country. I intend to finally write here about our experiences on this side of the planet. It’s been quite the ride. 😉 See you next Friday!
